Snowboarding Gear Checklist

Winter has arrived which means it’s time to hit the slopes! Whether it’s your very first time snowboarding or you’ve gone a few times, it can be a little nerve-wracking as you’re getting the hang of it. Snowboarding is an absolute blast and it’s the perfect way to unwind on the weekend, so any anxiety you have will subside once you hit the mountains. To guarantee you have the best possible experience, the team at Mr. Bike and Ski has put together a handy snowboarding gear checklist.

Snowboard Equipment

Snowboard

If you don’t already own a snowboard, bindings, and boots, you can rent them for a few hours or for the season. While you can choose from numerous types of boards including alpine, freestyle, and freeride, beginners tend to gravitate toward freestyle boards. These snowboards are easier to control which is perfect if you’re still getting used to the terrain.

Snowboard Boots

When choosing the right boots it’s crucial that you find a pair you’re 100% comfortable in - this can really affect your time on the slopes. Make sure the boots are nice and snug but not too tight where they feel restricting.

Helpful tip: Try on the boots with the socks you plan on wearing when snowboarding.

Bindings

The bindings fasten your boots to the board and come in a variety of sizes. Whether you’re renting or purchasing your snowboarding gear, you can have the staff help you make the best selection to make sure the bindings securely fasten.

Snowboard Clothing

Breathable Layers

Layers are key when it comes to staying warm while snowboarding. Try to avoid cotton because it’s not breathable or waterproof. Stick with a thin, long-sleeved undershirt with moisture-wicking fabric and throw on a layer over this like a fleece sweater or sweatshirt. When it comes to pants, stick with something you feel comfortable moving around in like long johns or leggings.

Snowboard Pants & Jacket

Slip on some snowboard pants over your layers to lock out moisture. These pants are specifically designed for the snow as they’re highly waterproof and have padding in the knee and butt, let’s face it, snowboarders spend more time on the snow buckling their bindings…

A snowboard jacket should keep you warm and allow sweat to escape. You’ll also want a jacket that can handle the fluctuating weather conditions. The weather can change at any time on the mountain so it’s important to have a jacket that you can feel comfortable in regardless of the weather.

Snowboard Accessories & Protective Gear

Goggles

Goggles are one of the most important pieces of snowboard gear, helping to protect you from the sun’s glare. Good lenses can help your eyes adjust to changing light conditions for day and night riding. Your goggles are also very important for safety and protect your eyes from snow flying in your face and the wind drying out your eyes while going down the mountain.

Gloves

You’ll need gloves that are durable, waterproof, and insulated so we recommend purchasing from a reputable brand like Gordini or North Face. Some people prefer mittens when outside. Although mittens are harder to use when buckling and adjusting your bindings, if you struggle with cold weather, they may be what you need.

Helmet

Both beginners and advanced snowboarders wear helmets. Similar to your boots, a helmet should be snug but not too tight. Test it out by shaking your head from side-to-side. If the helmet shifts, get a smaller size or use thicker sizing pads.

Your helmet should protect your forehead but it shouldn’t be so low that it interferes with your vision. Most helmets are goggle compatible and should fit seamlessly together to provide protection.

Rule of thumb: The front edge of your helmet should not be higher than 1” above your eyebrows.
